Welcome to our Coffee Chat series, where we get to know the “Logicians” who make Logic20/20 a great place to work. Today, we’re sitting down with Dave Perrin, a Senior Data Scientist based in Austin, Texas. Grab your favorite beverage, pull up a chair, and join us!

Can you share a bit about your career journey before joining Logic20/20?

It’s been quite a roller coaster. After high school, I attended college for a semester but soon realized my passion was music. I played guitar in a few rock bands with some minor success.

Recognizing that music wasn’t the most profitable career, I took night classes at a community college while working at a family member’s accounting firm. To streamline some tedious tasks, I taught myself programming and found I enjoyed it more than accounting.

This led me to the University of Texas at Austin, where I studied economics and statistics. I worked as a research assistant in an ichthyology lab, applying machine learning to model fish species distribution. My first data science role was in people analytics, modeling employee attrition rates, business process automation, designing dashboards, running surveys, and analyzing their results. Seeking more variety, I joined Logic20/20.

What attracted you to Logic20/20?

The variety of projects and exposure to different technologies were major draws. I also appreciated that most of our clients are U.S.-based, which means fewer time zone challenges. Additionally, I noticed how many employees have been with the company for five, 10, even 15-plus years, which is impressive in the tech industry and speaks to the positive work environment.

What keeps you coming back to Logic20/20?

The supportive and enjoyable work environment is a big factor. While there are busy periods, I generally have a good work-life balance. The company treats its employees well, and I appreciate the opportunities to explore new technologies, such as generative AI.

Speaking of which, can you tell us how you wound up working with Gen AI?

I’ve always been interested in AI, so I started looking for ways to get involved internally. I reached out to my CDL (Career Development Lead) and asked if there were any ongoing generative AI initiatives. He connected me with a team working on it, and I got the opportunity to contribute. That experience helped me upskill and gain hands-on experience with one of the fastest-growing areas in tech.

Logic20/20 really supports employees who take the initiative to explore new areas. If you make a strong case for learning something new, the company encourages you to dive in and apply it to future projects.

What career advice would you give to someone looking to get into consulting?

Be prepared to work hard and embrace variety. Consulting offers exposure to diverse projects and technologies, making it ideal for those who thrive on continuous learning and adaptation.

What’s your favorite thing to do in Austin when you’re not working?

I enjoy fishing in various areas around the city. It’s a great way to disconnect from screens and immerse myself in nature. I try to go at least once a week, and with longer daylight hours, I plan to head out after work more often.

If you could live in any of Logic20/20’s other Connected Hub locations, where would it be?

Seattle, without a doubt. I actually prefer cool, misty weather, which is quite the opposite of Texas. Seattle’s climate appeals to me.

What books, podcasts, or role models have influenced your career?

While I’ve read numerous white papers and books on machine learning, I draw inspiration from musicians like Mick Jagger and Steven Tyler. Their passion, longevity, and ability to stay youthful at heart resonate with me and remind me to maintain enthusiasm in my career.

And, finally, how do you take your coffee?

I actually don’t drink much coffee or caffeine, but when I do, I prefer black cold brew. Occasionally, I’ll treat myself to a caramel Frappuccino, especially during the summer.

We appreciate your insights and the story of your career journey, Dave—thank you for giving us a glimpse into what makes Logic20/20 a great place to work.
