Quick summary: Christina Joo, Director of Strategy and Operations, sits down with Managing Director Nick Maddock to discuss her professional journey and advice for those looking to advance their careers.
When I decided to leave a “Big Four” consulting firm and move across the country to join Logic20/20 as a senior consultant, I was eager to shift to a smaller, hybrid-office consulting environment where I could directly impact the capabilities of my colleagues. I was surprised and delighted by how quickly I was able to do that once starting at Logic20/20.
Instant company impact
Upon moving from the East Coast to join Logic20/20’s Seattle-based team in 2019, I was eager to bring immediate recommendations to the employee-onboarding process. The Logic20/20 leadership team acknowledged this commitment and asked me to provide a plan for these onboarding changes, which were then implemented in the process.
A growing support system
From my start at Logic20/20, I focused on establishing relationships with both my teams and the wider practice and consulting leadership. When I got pregnant with my first child, I worked directly with leadership to develop a plan for my maternity leave, and they were supportive of me throughout this process.
Logic’s commitment to work-life balance was refreshing and helped me acclimate to being a working mother. The executive team brought me on to support additional internal initiatives and promoted me to manager. My new role positioned me as the Practice Area Lead for Strategy & Operations, accelerating my exposure to leadership responsibilities and influencing strategic business decisions for the company.
Pathway to promotions
My continued commitment to advancing practice management and onboarding processes opened me up to more business-leadership roles within the organization—and gained me another promotion to a senior manager role. Bringing that same commitment to improving my colleagues’ experiences, I showed I was ready for additional account management exposure.
As a Practice Area Lead, I gained more visibility to the company’s operations and increased my interactions with Logic20/20’s leadership team. My most recent promotion to Director of Strategy & Operations resulted from prioritizing initiatives and contributions to the company, both for clients and for internal teams.
I enjoy leading with curiosity and the validation that “knowing that there is no right answer is just as meaningful as knowing what the right answer is.”
Logic20/20 career mentorship and advice
The supportive mentorship I’ve received from the leadership team at Logic20/20 has encouraged me to take on seemingly daunting challenges and develop new skills.
It’s common to pass Christian (our CEO) in the halls and for him to ask a question or acknowledge some recent work from my team. These touchpoints aren’t common in bigger firms and make me appreciate the switch to Logic20/20.
For others looking to accelerate their careers, I encourage them to lean into the challenges—and to feel comfortable operating in ambiguity and speaking up when potential issues or questions arise. There aren’t any barriers to teamwork at Logic20/20, and the company will meet you where you are while encouraging you to take on challenges and develop new skills. Seek career opportunities with supportive teams that give you the trust and the space to flourish.
Nick’s POV: Christina’s journey from consultant to director
At Logic20/20, we’re not just about delivering exceptional results; we’re about fostering exceptional talent. Take Christina’s journey with us—a testament to our commitment to nurturing and rewarding talent.
Christina joined Logic20/20 with a solid background and quickly proved her mettle. Her first project was a glimpse into her capability to deliver with precision and excellence. Recognizing her talent, we paired her with our internal leaders to work on an internal process improvement project. It was evident from the start—Christina was sharp, meticulous, and brimming with insights. Though she spoke softly, her words carried weight, and I learned to listen.
In leadership we talk about our consultants a lot, and it was clear that my experience was not unique, Christina was highly intelligent, had great insight, and great potential.
In leadership, we talked about Christina’s career development plan and to make sure that we could give her the opportunity to grow as a consultant and grow into becoming a leader. In effect this meant thinking about what opportunities to put Christina on thinking about what internal opportunities we could provide to Christina and ensuring that she had support and opportunity to grow.
Support along the way
At each stage, Christina took on the challenge (but not without some trepidation and fear), worked hard to succeed, asked for advice when she needed it and ultimately nailed almost every project and opportunity.
Christina embraced each challenge with determination, albeit with understandable nerves. She sought advice, worked diligently, and excelled in nearly every endeavor. As her manager, I had the privilege of overseeing her career trajectory from a senior consultant to a manager, then to a senior manager, and now, to a director—all within four years.
Witnessing Christina’s growth, her ascent to owning now a significant portion of our business and managing one of our largest clients, has been incredibly rewarding. She has earned every bit of her success, I am just happy that we have played a part in opening the doors for her career.
This one of the best things about working at Logic20/20—seeing our consultants evolve into extraordinary leaders. I believe we can provide the opportunity and the support to nurture talent so people can grow in their careers at their pace, not by counting years in role, and so help them achieve their potential.
